By Kim Cooper, Youth Culture Inc.
Youth Culture has curated our Top 5 Resources for Diversity and Inclusion Training. I first learned about the true dangers of unconscious bias and the importance of diversity and inclusion training when I wrote the book Girls in Science Voices for Change: Tips for Equality and Inclusion in Schools, Workplaces, and Communities. Interviewing the girls and young women opened by eyes to the dire need for diversity and inclusion training. Unconscious bias limits potential and opportunity for individuals and teams. Diversity and inclusion training is key to building high-performing teams. These top 5 resources for diversity and inclusion training will help guide conversations that will strengthen teams.

1. Microsoft Free E-training Modules
Why we like it: Microsoft has an extensive library with free learning resources perfect for diversity and inclusion training created to inspire inclusive environments where all people feel valued, heard and included. The library includes a number of topics like inclusion and allyship, inclusion and bias, and inclusion and privilege. The Unconscious Bias Course is divided into digestible chapters with videos and transcripts. There’s also a handy learning guide for diversity and inclusion training with key terms, key concepts, further resources and reflection. This is a turnkey resource that can apply to individual learning or group sessions.
2. Subtle Acts of Exclusion: How to Understand, Identify, and Stop Microaggressions
By Tiffany Jana and Michael Baran
Why we like it: Tiffany Jana, co-author of the book, is the CEO of TMI Portfolio, a collection of companies working to advance inclusive workspaces, and she’s also the author of the book Overcoming Bias and Erasing Institutional Bias. Instead of using the word microaggressions, which can often be confusing to some, they have implied a more production term called “subtle acts of exclusion” or SAE. This book is structured to challenge us during our diversity and inclusion learning journey and it also provides scripts and action plans to lead to more inclusive environments and conversations.
3. How to Be an Inclusive Leader: Your Role in Creating Cultures of Belonging Where Everyone Can Thrive
By Jennifer Brown
Why we like it: There’s nothing better than discovering that a book goes beyond the content of the pages and is equipped with online resources for diversity and inclusion training. That’s exactly the case with this 148-page book. The author Jennifer Brown has an acclaimed podcast called the Will to Change which is an additional resource. The most useful part of this book was the questions at the end of most chapters to reflect and consider.
4. The Leader’s Guide to Unconscious Bias: How To Reframe Bias, Cultivate Connection, and Create High-Performing Teams
By Pamela Fuller
Why we like it: This was by far our favourite resource for diversity and inclusion training. Focusing on the success and performance of teams appeals to most learners, particularly at the executive level. The book has a four-part framework including Identifying Bias, Cultivating Connection, Choosing Courage and Applying Across the Talent Lifecycle. The content and format of this book provided an excellent foundation to develop further material tailored for our audience.
5. Managing a Diverse Team Online Course from LinkedIn Learning
Why we like it: This a good starting point in your diversity and inclusion training. In this hour and twenty minute course, leadership coach Vanessa Womack covers strategies to lead a diverse team. This is an intermediate course that you will learn concepts to apply to your diversity and inclusion training and journey.
