We are thrilled to collaborate with Plan International Canada to deliver the Be Real, Be Me program in partnership with facilitator Farzana. This initiative is a significant part of Plan International Canada’s larger “Power Within” program, which aims to tackle the challenges young people face around self-esteem and body image.
What Is the Be Real, Be Me Program?
The Be Real, Be Me program is focused on building body confidence and self-esteem among young Canadians, particularly girls and gender-diverse youth. It provides interactive resources, expert-led workshops, and inclusive discussions designed to help participants confront societal norms and harmful messages about appearance.
The program doesn’t just stop at young participants; it also equips parents, educators, and community leaders with tools and strategies to better support the youth in their lives.
By addressing these issues early, Be Real, Be Me empowers participants to develop a positive relationship with themselves and inspires long-lasting change in their communities.
The Goals of Be Real, Be Me
1. Build Body Confidence and Self-Esteem
At its core, this program encourages young people to see their self-worth beyond appearances. It provides insights on how to be resilient against negative influences, whether from peers, media, or societal expectations.
Imagine giving young people the tools to step out into the world with unshakeable confidence and a better understanding of their true value—that’s the heart of Be Real, Be Me.
2. Promote Healthy Relationships with Their Bodies
Young people today are bombarded with idealized, often unattainable beauty standards. From airbrushed social media posts to unrealistic advertising, these pressures can foster harmful relationships with their bodies.
Be Real, Be Me offers resources that challenge these norms and encourage participants to appreciate the value of their bodies for what they can do, rather than how they look.
This leads to healthier mindsets, improving both mental well-being and overall quality of life.
3. Create a More Equitable Society
The ripple effect of confidence and self-worth goes far beyond the individual. When young people are empowered, they contribute to creating more inclusive, accepting environments for everyone.
The program acknowledges the damaging impact of societal pressures and works to break down barriers, promoting acceptance, respect, and equity for all bodies and identities.
Why Programs Like Be Real, Be Me Matter
Self-esteem and body image challenges are universal, affecting young people from all walks of life. However, societal pressures disproportionately impact girls and gender-diverse youth, making targeted programs like this essential.
Research shows that fostering confidence and positive self-image during formative years leads to improvements in mental health, academic performance, and interpersonal relationships. It also helps create a generation of individuals who value inclusivity and challenge toxic norms.
Programs like Be Real, Be Me don’t just benefit individuals. They inspire broader cultural change, encouraging entire communities to think differently about self-worth and body acceptance.
